Battlefield 2142 not running in vista
Machines that we've seen with Vista that work "well" actually perform a LOT better with XP installed on them, almost twice as fast in "feel" and certainly much faster for any game that requires any power. I just took another Dual 3Ghz Xeon system with 4GB RAM and a 128MB AGP Video card, very nice system for all

Will this build work with Vista at the moment?
Just wondering if an adequate power supply was installed to support the GF 8800 video card plus the extra RAM? I have a much less power hungry ATI card that usually runs flawlessly. It will take a while to catch up. This is normal. 64 bit linux was a pain to start with as well, but it's a lot better now. Yes games chew a LOT of cpu and ram, but again, if the average consumer only has 512-1024MB of memory, 64-bit does nothing for them since almost all games are 32- bit.

Video Card Upgrade
The program, previously part of a special version of XP, adds some of Vista's visual pizazz to a package that bundles a digital video recorder for capturing live standard and high-definition TV. My opinion
Now a passing comment about your video card- it's a 6800 but which one? With only 128MB of memory it might be a lower-end crippled version of 6800, I know DX10 is only in Vista. How long will that take? It took XP requirement for a few years to happen so I might wait that long as well before I jump to Vista.

Vista does have a few problems, which SP1 corrects, more or less. A few suggestions I have found which DO work speeding Vista up: Above all, make sure your system has the fastest Core2 Duo processor you can afford, the fastest and most memory your MB will support, and the best and fastest Video card you can afford.

The real concession to flight sim is the second video card. Now why am I doing this? Because I play with lots of software - most of it not games. going to keep running FS9, and I'm going to play the games I have right through (which in itself could take years). DX10 is an unproven quantity. Vista is unproven.

From what I understand I'll need to take the motherboard out anyway to change it so I might do the upgrade now. If my system will not be able to work well enough to play games like EQ2, or Gothic III, I'm gonna wait. Anyone who has a similar setup with Vista please let me know. Thanks!

My experience was that the leap from my 6800 to the 8800 (BFG 88640 GTS OC) was impressive- even running Direct X 9 games, the 8800 has a much nicer presentation. Having said that, a 6 of 7 series card will work fine in Vista, you just won't get to take advantage of the Direct X 10 capability.
